Grayson Highlands

We really enjoyed our hike into Virginia! We stayed at "The Place" hostel overnight in Damascus. The following morning Larry "The Only Wanderer" cooked us breakfast in his home! We thoroughly enjoyed this town, and we're glad that we could experience it as it truly is before we return in two weeks for Trail Days. Then, the town (which has a population of about 1000) has 25,000 visitors for hiking workshops, food, a parade, and campout!

Hiking into Mount Rogers National Recreation Area was a real treat! Even though we had a few days of rain, we were always dry at night. The rain even stopped long enough for us to take pictures of the beautiful Wilburn ponies. This picture was taken right after our stay at Thomas Knob shelter. There were about 15 friendly ponies, including 4 babies! We saw several more ponies later that day.
